All of Dem Witches

I finished off October and my scary/horror movie streak with my first watch of “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968). It took me soooooooooo long to write this post because I genuinely liked this movie. And it’s hard to write about a movie that you genuinely like. Being sarcastic is much easier than being complimentary. 🙂

I can’t quite put my finger on why this movie is so good. Maybe it’s because we are all kept guessing until the very end. Maybe it’s because we never actually SEE Rosemary’s baby. Or, maybe it’s because the UNSEEN makes our imaginations work harder… and that’s the scariest thing of all.

Every good post needs a list and a few GIFs. So, I’ll happily oblige. Here are my favorite things about “Rosemary’s Baby”:

Mia Farrow. I can’t get over how beautiful she is in this movie. Even when she is sick and pregnant with the spawn of Satan, she’s still a 10.

The drug-induced dream sequences. Truly creepy, but truly beautiful. Except for that one time when it wasn’t a dream…

All of the unknowns. Were the Castevets evil or just creepy old neighbors? Is Guy conspiring against Rosemary or is he just a really careless husband? What if Rosemary is just crazy?!

Great characters. The old, nosey neighbors. The uppity Doctor with weird medical practices. The suspect actor-husband. The old friend who calls bull on Rosemary’s “it’s normal that I’m this sickly while pregnant” story.

Mind games! There were some times in the movie where I thought that maybe Rosemary was just having a mental breakdown. Maybe she is just a crazy pregnant lady who thinks her husband and neighbors are witches…

The end. When all is finally revealed and Rosemary’s suspicions are confirmed. It’s HORRIBLE. But it’s also relieving. She’s not crazy! Then, she does the unthinkable. She accepts the duty of mothering her devil-child just to have a relationship with her son. Chills.

I’m considering watching this one again, just so I can pay close attention to all of the things I might have missed the first time!
